I finished reading a copy of Dick Smiths new Makeup Course for Beginners. For years, he had the advanced course, but there was a need for a good beginners course. If you have ever thought about doing makeup and special effects but didn't know if you would really like it, and before shelling out thousands for those schools or courses, I suggest you run through this book. It will take about a month of work, but at the end you will know if this is a career that you would like to pursue. Make sure you check out the long career of Dick Smith and all his wonderful work.
